Imaginary Furniture
Imaginary Furniture is a North Carolina-based design studio that creates one-of-a-kind functional works of art for meaningful spaces — pieces with material history, sculptural presence, and heirloom permanence.
Each work is designed and built by hand in Waxhaw, North Carolina, with an emphasis on form, material honesty, and permanence.
What We Create
Imaginary Furniture creates completely unique heirloom quality furniture, sculptural objects, and architectural pieces for spaces that call for something more personal than a catalog piece.
Our work includes dining tables, conference tables, shelving, seating, lighting, objects, and site-specific commissions for homes, offices, hospitality spaces, and design-led projects.
Each piece is shaped around the room it will live in, the material it is made from, and the role it needs to play — whether that means anchoring a space, starting a conversation, or becoming the object everything else gathers around.
From Idea to Heirloom
Each commission begins with a conversation about the space, the purpose, and the feeling the piece needs to create.
From there, we develop the design through sketches, material selection, proportion studies, and 3D modeling before the piece moves into the shop. Every step is handled with care — from material preparation and joinery to shaping, finishing, delivery, and installation.
Many pieces begin with local timber, reclaimed material, or wood milled and dried in-house from naturally fallen trees around the farm. The result is furniture with a direct connection to material, place, and permanence.
